Hydrogen Sulfide in New Hampshire Water
Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S), also known as sulfur and the rotten egg smell, is common in New Hampshire’s residential well water. Technically, it is a gas created by the decay of anything organic, but in our state, the main culprit is iron or manganese bacteria that grows in the mineral-lined pipes from the bottom of the well all the way to the faucet. Incidentally, this bacteria is harmless. This mineral bacteria has a life cycle of life, grow, die and decay. It is during this decay process that this odorous gas is created.
Health Risks
There is no danger associated with hydrogen sulfide gas, just an annoying or even downright nasty odor that can be embarrassing when a company comes to call. The rotten egg smell can also linger after bathing, it can even stay in your clothes after washing them and even add an unpleasant taste to your drinking water.
Treatment Options
