Well Pressure Tanks in New Hampshire
Pressure tanks, pressure switches, and well pumps work together to create well pump systems.
Modern pressure tanks have a bladder that comes pre-charged with pressurized air above the bladder. These new generation pressure tanks are generally 66% air and 33% water when full. Water will fill up under the bladder and compresses the air above the bladder until it reaches 60psi. Once 60psi is reached, the pressure switch will turn the power off to the pump. (Switches typically turn the pump on at 40psi and off at 60psi.) When water is in use on the property, the compressed air will push down on the bladder and push the water to the household plumbing supply, until the pressure switch reactivates. This cycle will continue many times a day, year after year, until one of the components fails.
Pressure tanks come in various sizes ranging, from 20 gallons to 119 gallons. Although most residential properties typically utilize sizes of 20-44 gallons, bigger pressure tanks allow for the well-pump to do less work, ensuring the pumps last longer.
When McBride’s Water Advantage is called to troubleshoot for a low or no water situation, we will inspect pressure tanks and test well pumps to review the state of your well pump system. This will allow us to ensure we are getting a complete picture of the system and offer the best solution for your problem. We also provide inspections of well pump equipment during regularly scheduled service calls upon request. Click the button below for a demonstration of how a pressure tank works.
