Nitrate and Nitrite in New Hampshire Water
Nitrate is a component of fertilizer and both nitrite and nitrate are found in sewage and sanitary wastes from humans and animals. Certain construction activities such as blasting can be another source of nitrate in bedrock wells. Nitrate or nitrite levels can become elevated when the surrounding area is heavily developed, used for agricultural purposes, or subject to heavy fertilization. High levels of nitrate and nitrite are not common in New Hampshire.
Problems
Nitrate and nitrite when present in water may not have an odor or taste. A laboratory test is required to determine excessive levels. The EPA maximum containment level for nitrate is 10 mg/l and 1.0 mg/l for nitrite.
Health Risks
Excessive levels of these nitrogen compounds in drinking water are a health concern for infants and women during pregnancy.
Treatment Options
Nitrate and Nitrite can easily be removed by point-of-use reverse osmosis or a whole-house water softener.
