Sodium Chloride in New Hampshire Water
Sodium Chloride (salt) is reported as mg/l on any water test report. There is no primary standard at this time for sodium chloride. The secondary standard is 250 mg/l, this is the level at that we can start to taste the saltiness in the water. There is very little sodium chloride naturally in New Hampshire’s well water inland from the seacoast with more at the seacoast because of the influence of the seawater. When there is, it is generally because of contamination by human activities such as road de-icing, storage, and other activities.
Problems
Salty water is corrosive in copper pipes and plumbing fixtures. Salty water is distasteful.
Health Risks
There are no health-based standards for sodium or chloride under the Federal State Drinking Water Act, just a secondary standard of 250 mg/l. Sodium is known to be linked to hypertension (high blood pressure), though the sodium in your drinking water has far less impact on your diet than the food you eat. Even water that is treated by water softeners has less sodium than the everyday foods we eat, i.e., a slice of bread.
Treatment Options
Of the three treatment options available by homeowners (Reverse Osmosis, Distillation, and De-ionization), reverse osmosis is the only cost-effective or viable option. Reverse Osmosis units range in size from under the sink unit, to whole-house treatment machines.

Jared came out to give me an estimate on a job as I had some major concerns on my end. (He was here for a good while ) He was extremely informative extremely patient and told me exactly what I needed to do. Did not try to sell me anything did not try to push me to do anything I didn’t need to do. This company is extremely honest. I’ve dealt with many companies in the past. I called them for a follow up question regarding my well water pump, and Jared explained everything I needed to know and there was no charge.
I can tell you from experience another company would’ve charged for the service call.

Very professional service right from the phone call for an appointment. Stephanie is always a pleasure to talk with and knowledgeable about her crews schedules.Technician came over and explained the system to us as we just bought in October. We've had McBride Water Advantage for both of our homes. No problems at all. Good company and really nice service people. We just had our filtration system serviced 4/28/25. The man the sent to clean and check on our system was awesome. I've never had any complaints about the company.
It's 4/09/26. Just had them here servicing and cleaning our filtration system again. It's been a year since their last service. The gentleman that came today was great. They hire such smart people. When he was done servicing my system, I had a few questions for him and he took out his little kit and tested my water to try to solve the issue I had. We have a well and the system I have works great for the well issues. But I had a build up in my glass teapot that was bothering me. I showed it to him, he did a little testing on my kitchen water spout and found the issue. The water from the filtration system is very good water. But I have an additional problem that can be taken care of but doesn't need to. It won't hurt us in our drinking water. But I need a softener to get rid of that buildup. In my teapot I was given an estimate along with the bill for services today. Not sure if we'll go with it or not but it's good to know what's going on. A heck of a nice guy and very thorough. I like McBride water advantage. They've always done well for us.
