Copper in New Hampshire Water
In our home state of New Hampshire, copper enters drinking water primarily through plumbing materials, copper pipes, and fixtures due to corrosion. In the vast majority of cases, degradation of copper pipes is caused by acidic and/or low alkalinity well water. Water is tested at the tap by a first draw water sample after a six-hour waiting period. If concentrations exceed an action level of 1.3 mg/L actions must be taken to control corrosion in the pipes (pH adjustment).
Problems
Corrosion of copper pipes, pinholes can and will appear, and hot water heating and boilers will prematurely fail. Bluish-green staining will appear in toilets, sinks, showers, and tubs.
Health Risks
Exposure to copper may cause health problems ranging from stomach distress to brain damage.
Treatment Options
Homeowner may have to replace copper service lines under their control or undertake corrosion control treatment steps. The most cost-effective is to install an Acid Neutralizer.
